What is Francophonie?

The term Francophonie appeared for the first time in 1880. It was the French geographer Onésime Reclus (1837-1916) who used it to designate the geographical spaces where the French language was spoken.

The term “Francophonie” refers to the geographical spaces where the French language is spoken and the governments or official bodies that use French in their work or exchanges, contributing to its geopolitical significance globally.

French’s legal status is seen in various countries where it serves as an official, co-official, or administrative language, illustrating its geopolitical relevance.

Countries that have seen a significant increase in French language education as a second or foreign language include China, Brazil, India and Africa.

The trend of increasing French speakers is largely attributed to urbanization, education of policies and cultural influence.

Today we understand by francophonie ( with a lowercase initial) all PEOPLES or groups of speakers who partially or entirely use the French language in their daily life or their communications.

The term Francophonie (with an initial capital) rather designates all GOVERNMENTS, countries or official bodies which have in common the use of French in their work or their exchanges.

La Francophonie is associated with the Organization international de la Francophonie.

As an official (or co-official) language, French remains the second language in the world in terms of political importance. Even if, like English, it is not the mother tongue of all citizens in most of the countries concerned, French occupies privileged strategic positions as an administrative language, language of teaching, language of communication, army, language of justice, language of the media, language of commerce or business, etc.
